About two-thirds of Americans own a mobile phone -- that's 233 million of us, up from just 5 million in 1990. But aside from the occasional nuisance of being subjected to one end of a personal conversation in the supermarket, are there any real problems associated with the skyrocketing growth of cell phones?

Mobile Phone to Improve Pedestrian Safety

In Japan, officials are taking an intriguingly alternative approach. Among other efforts, they hope to use mobile phone technology to warn pedestrians of impending accident situations to prevent vehicle-pedestrian crashes.
